How to read this guide: this is a specification comparison based on current UK manufacturer and retailer information checked on 22 September 2026. Pawwala has not completed a controlled hands-on wash test of every bed listed, so we do not claim otherwise. Prices and care instructions can change; verify the product label before washing.

Quick answer

  • ✓A removable machine-washable cover is different from a fully machine-washable bed.
  • ✓The Omlet Topology has the clearest quick-change system in this shortlist because its toppers zip on and off the mattress.
  • ✓For accidents, look for a waterproof or water-resistant inner liner as well as a washable outer cover.
  • ✓Measure the usable sleeping area; raised bolsters can make the inside much smaller than the advertised external dimensions.

Washable dog beds compared

We shortlisted beds sold to UK customers where a current product or range page states what can be washed. The table separates cleaning, support and moisture protection because retailers often combine these into a single “washable” claim.

What “washable” should mean

1. Removable-cover washable

The cover goes into the machine while the foam or filling stays out. This is the most common design and makes routine cleaning practical, but it does not protect the filling from urine, vomit or wet fur unless the bed also has a liquid-resistant liner.

2. Separate washable components

Some beds allow the cover and bolster to be washed separately. Check each care label: a 30°C cover does not mean the foam mattress, zip, base or non-slip backing can use the same cycle.

3. Fully washable bed

The complete bed can enter a domestic machine. This can be convenient for puppies and frequent accidents, but only if its size and wet weight suit your washer. A bulky large bed may be technically washable yet impractical at home.

How we compared these beds

Our current assessment uses seven fields: washable components, stated wash temperature, support material, inner moisture protection, usable dimensions, replacement-cover availability and current UK price. We favour precise care instructions over vague “easy clean” wording.

✓ Cleaning clarity: exact parts, cycle and drying method
✓ Fit: usable sleeping area as well as outside dimensions
✓ Accident protection: liner claim separated from cover claim
✓ Support: stated foam or filling rather than marketing labels
✓ Repairability: replacement covers or toppers
✓ Value: current price considered with replacement-part cost

We will add wash-cycle durability results only after completing and documenting repeatable tests. Until then, the shortlist reflects verified specifications and use-case fit, not unobserved long-term performance.

Which bed suits which dog?

Senior dogs and dogs with reduced mobility

Prioritise an accessible step-in height, a stable non-slip base and a supportive mattress. Memory foam can distribute pressure, but “orthopaedic” is not a regulated performance score. Check foam construction and usable depth rather than relying on the label alone.

Large dogs

Measure your dog while sleeping naturally. Compare that length with the internal sleeping area, especially on bolster beds. The Omlet Bolster, for example, publishes both external and internal dimensions, showing how much space the raised edge occupies.

Puppies, incontinent dogs and muddy walkers

A washable cover alone may not be enough. Look for a protected mattress, simple zips and a spare-cover option so the bed remains usable while one cover dries. Avoid promising “waterproof” performance unless the maker explicitly specifies it.

Dogs that chew bedding

No soft bed should be assumed chew-proof. Supervise a dog that tears or eats fabric, and remove damaged foam or filling. Durability claims need hands-on evidence; fabric thickness and “tough” wording alone do not establish chew resistance.

Dog bed size guide

Measure from nose to the base of the tail in the dog's longest normal sleeping position, then compare that number with the internal sleeping surface. Add room for repositioning. If a listing only provides outside dimensions, ask the retailer for the usable area before ordering.

  1. Measure your dog asleep rather than standing.
  2. Record nose-to-tail-base length and shoulder width.
  3. Check internal bed dimensions, not only the parcel or frame size.
  4. Check the return policy before choosing between sizes.
  5. For a growing puppy, consider an inexpensive washable interim bed before a premium adult-size bed.

How to wash a dog bed safely

  1. Read the sewn-in care label and current manufacturer instructions.
  2. Vacuum hair, sand and grit before removing the cover.
  3. Close zips and separate only the components the maker says can be removed.
  4. Use the stated temperature and detergent guidance; do not assume a hot hygiene cycle is safe.
  5. Dry every component completely before reassembly to reduce trapped damp.
  6. Inspect seams, zips and exposed filling before returning the bed to your dog.

What this page still needs from hands-on testing

For the next evidence update, Pawwala's protocol should record cover-removal time, pre- and post-wash dimensions, dry time, zip operation, seam condition, retained odour and foam protection after at least three labelled wash cycles. The page should publish the dogs involved, test dates, photographs and limitations. That original UK dataset would be more useful to shoppers and more citable than another summary of manufacturer copy.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Can a dog bed be washed in a washing machine?

Sometimes. A product may call itself washable when only its removable cover can go in the machine. Check the label for the cover, bolster and inner cushion separately, along with the maximum temperature and drying instructions.

What is the best washable dog bed for a large dog?

Start with the usable sleeping area rather than the external size. A large dog should be able to lie in its normal sleeping position without its head or hips hanging over the edge. Check weight support, foam depth and replacement-cover availability before buying.

Are waterproof and washable dog beds the same?

No. Washable describes how the fabric or bed can be cleaned. Waterproof describes whether liquid can reach the filling. A removable washable cover may still allow an accident to soak into the foam unless there is a waterproof or water-resistant liner.

How often should a dog bed be washed?

Follow the manufacturer's label and clean sooner after accidents, illness, parasites or heavy mud. Vacuuming hair and grit between washes reduces debris in the washing machine and abrasion on the fabric.
