How We Review Pet Products
Every guide, review, and recommendation on Pawwala follows the same rigorous six-step process. Here's exactly how we work.
Product Sourcing & Longlist
We start by mapping the UK market for each category — identifying every product available from reputable UK retailers. Our longlist is built without regard to affiliate availability; if a product is sold in the UK and has meaningful market presence, it goes on the list.
- ▸We check Pets at Home, Zooplus, Amazon UK, VioVet, and specialist retailers.
- ▸We exclude products available only through US or EU sites with no UK shipping.
- ▸We identify products with verifiable ingredient or formulation transparency.
Hands-On Testing
We buy shortlisted products ourselves (or are provided samples, which we disclose) and test them with real pets over a minimum of two weeks. We do not write reviews based on press releases, brand-supplied testimonials, or marketing materials.
- ▸For food and supplements: palatability, digestive response, and ingredient quality are assessed over 14+ days.
- ▸For physical products (beds, toys, leads): durability, ease of use, safety, and real-world performance.
- ▸For insurance: we compare policy documents, excess structures, exclusions, and claims processes.
Veterinary Review
Every health, nutrition, or supplement review is sent to one of our registered UK vets before publication. They check our assessment against clinical evidence, flag any health claims that lack scientific support, and confirm ingredient safety.
- ▸Vet review is mandatory for supplements, prescription diets, joint care, dental products, and any product making a health claim.
- ▸Vets can — and do — reject products from our recommendations if they have concerns.
- ▸Pages with vet input display a 'Vet Reviewed' badge and the reviewing vet's credentials.
Scoring & Ranking
We score each product across five criteria using a weighted methodology. Products must achieve a minimum threshold to be included in a 'Best of' guide. A high score is required to earn our 'Pawwala Pick' badge.
- ▸Quality / ingredients (30%): formulation, sourcing, certifications.
- ▸Value for money (25%): price per serving/unit versus quality.
- ▸Real-world effectiveness (25%): how well it actually worked during testing.
- ▸UK availability & ease of purchase (10%): stocked by reputable UK retailers.
- ▸Transparency (10%): brand's honesty about ingredients, manufacturing, and clinical evidence.
Ongoing Updates
Our reviews are not set-and-forget. We revisit guides on a scheduled basis and update them whenever: a formula changes, a product is discontinued, a price shifts significantly, or community feedback reveals issues we missed.
- ▸All guides display a 'Last reviewed' date at the top.
- ▸We monitor community feedback, vet literature, and brand announcements.
- ▸If a product we previously recommended receives consistent negative feedback, we re-test and update our rating.
Editorial Independence
Our editorial team and commercial team operate independently. Brands cannot pay for inclusion or pay to improve a rating. Affiliate commission rates are never visible to our writers or reviewers at the time of writing.
- ▸Sponsored content (if any) is always clearly labelled as 'Sponsored' and kept editorially separate from our reviews.
- ▸We decline review requests where brands require editorial approval over our conclusions.
- ▸Products from brands we have a direct commercial relationship with are identified in the review.
