Three kits, one dog, three different answers
Before you spend up to ยฃ145 on a kit, it's worth knowing about a test that Countryfile Magazine actually ran. They sent DNA from a rescue dog called Lyra to Wisdom Panel, DNA My Dog and Know Your Pet DNA by Ancestry. Lyra's confirmed mother was a purebred Belgian Malinois, so the expected result was roughly half Malinois.
Wisdom Panel came back with 47% American Staffordshire terrier and only 35% Belgian Malinois. Ancestry put her at 43% American pit bull terrier and 22% Belgian Malinois. DNA My Dog was the only one that landed close to the known parentage, at 50% Belgian Malinois. The Countryfile writer summed it up plainly: they "can't shake concerns about the basics of the results."
We think that's a genuinely useful data point, not a reason to write off DNA testing altogether. It just means the exact percentage on your printout is one company's best statistical guess against its own reference database, not a lab-verified fact. Different databases, different guesses.
What's on the market right now
Prices and what's included checked directly on each retailer's site on 24 September 2026. Health screening is where these kits genuinely earn their keep, since it's testing for a specific known gene rather than guessing at ancestry.

Health screening is the part worth taking seriously
MDR1 and drug sensitivity
If you own a Collie, Australian Shepherd, or any breed with herding ancestry, the MDR1 mutation matters. Dogs with this mutation can react badly to certain common medications, including some used for parasite prevention and sedation before surgery. This isn't a statistical guess, it's a direct test for a known mutation, and it's genuinely worth knowing before your dog ever needs that medication. Tell your vet the result either way.
Breed specific health risks
Knowing your dog carries genes linked to hip dysplasia, certain eye conditions, or breed specific heart issues gives you and your vet a head start on what to watch for, even in a mixed breed rescue where you had no idea what was in the mix. That's arguably more useful than knowing the exact breed percentage.
How we compared these kits
We checked live pricing and product descriptions on Wisdom Panel, EasyDNA and the retailer pages linked above on 24 September 2026. We did not buy and run any of these kits ourselves, so we can't independently confirm accuracy claims beyond what Countryfile's own test found. Where a spec wasn't published, we've said so rather than guessing.
Limitations. This is a price and specification comparison, not a lab audit. Breed percentage accuracy depends entirely on the size and quality of each company's reference database, which none of them publish in enough detail for us to verify independently.

โ Frequently Asked Questions
What is the highest rated dog DNA test kit?
Wisdom Panel is the most established brand and the one you'll most often see used by UK vets, largely down to the size of its breed reference database. That doesn't make its breed percentages gospel, and we haven't seen a UK-specific star rating system worth quoting here, so treat any single brand's five-star reviews with a bit of scepticism.
Are there any reliable dog DNA tests?
For health markers like MDR1 drug sensitivity, yes, those tests look for a specific known gene mutation and are generally trusted by vets. For breed percentages, reliability is a lot shakier, which is exactly what Countryfile Magazine found when they ran the same rescue dog through three different kits and got three different breed breakdowns. See the section below for the full detail.
Is Embark or DNA My Dog better?
Embark is a well regarded US brand with a large research database, but at the time we checked, it didn't have confirmed native GBP pricing for UK buyers and ships from the US, so factor in currency conversion and shipping time. DNA My Dog is cheaper and UK-friendly, but in Countryfile's test it was the only one of three kits whose result actually matched the dog's known parentage, while also giving a slightly odd catch-all category called 'ultimutt' for anything it couldn't confidently place. Neither is a clear winner. Pick based on whether you want health screening (Embark and Wisdom Panel offer it, DNA My Dog doesn't) rather than brand loyalty.
Is a dog DNA test worth it?
Depends what you want from it. For fun and curiosity about a rescue dog's likely mix, yes, go for it, just don't treat the exact percentages as fact. For genuine health screening, particularly MDR1 status before your dog needs certain medications, a test that includes health markers is genuinely useful and worth discussing with your vet. For settling an argument about whether your dog is 'really' a specific breed, we'd manage your expectations.
