Quick answer

  • ✓Published 'from' prices run from about 62p a day for personalised dry food to £2.34 a day for fresh cooked food, for the example dogs the brands use.
  • ✓Fresh and raw food needs freezer space; air-dried and dry food lives in the cupboard.
  • ✓First-box discounts are large, but no brand publishes the full price until after its quiz.
  • ✓Check the cancellation cut-off: miss it and the next box usually still ships.

Personalised subscriptions compared

These brands set the recipe or portion from a short quiz about your dog. Prices in the table are each brand's own published “from” figure and what it is based on; your price depends on your dog's size and the plan.

How to choose

Start with the type of food

Fresh cooked (Butternut Box, Different Dog) and raw (Bella & Duke) arrive frozen and need defrosting in the fridge. Air-dried food (Pure Pet Food) is rehydrated with water and kept in the cupboard. Personalised dry food (tails.com) is the closest to ordinary kibble. If you are weighing up raw feeding, read our guide to choosing dog food first.

Price the second box, not the first

Every personalised brand leads with a first-box discount, and none publishes the full price before the quiz. Take the per-day figure shown at checkout, multiply by 30, and compare that with what you spend now. Our dog food cost guide shows typical costs for ordinary dry and wet food.

Check the cut-off before you sign up

Cancellation deadlines range from midnight the day before renewal (Pooch & Mutt) to three days before delivery once an invoice is raised (Different Dog). Butternut Box's trial box is part of the plan and cannot be skipped.

Confirm it is a complete food

A complete food can be fed on its own; a complementary one cannot. Bella & Duke's “Pure Meat + Bone” range is not labelled complete, and the subscribe-and-save brands sell both kinds.

Not included

Years recalled all of its fresh meals on 17 August 2026 after reports of dry eye in dogs. Its notice of 24 September says its investigation found no contamination and that it would resume serving existing customers from 20 October, with new customers on a waitlist (Years customer notice). We will reassess it once new sign-ups reopen. Edgard & Cooper is not listed because we could not confirm a UK subscription.

Recall history matters for any food you buy repeatedly. Of the brands above, the only Food Standards Agency alert we found was for Lily's Kitchen in May 2023 (FSA-PRIN-13-2023, two recipes, possible plastic); it also recalled one batch of Pasta al Ragu in January 2026 (Lily's Kitchen notices).

What we did, and what we did not do

We did: compared each brand's published food type, 'from' prices and what they are based on, first-box offers, delivery charges, storage advice and cancellation terms on its own website, and searched Food Standards Agency alerts and brand notices for recalls.

We did not: feed any of these foods to our own dogs, or complete each brand's quiz for a range of dog sizes. tails.com's website blocked our page checks, so its figures come from its own pages as shown in search results; check them on tails.com before you buy. The FSA search covered the first page of results only.

Prices and terms checked on 21 October 2026. They change; confirm on the retailer's page before you buy.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a dog food subscription cost in the UK?

The brands' own 'from' prices start at about 62p a day for personalised dry food (tails.com) and £0.89 a day for air-dried food (Pure Pet Food, small dog), rising to £1.18 a day for raw (Bella & Duke, 5–10 kg dog) and £2.34 a day for fresh cooked food (Butternut Box, 12–15 kg dog). Larger dogs cost more, and most brands only show your price after a short quiz.

What happens when the first-box discount ends?

You pay the full price from the next box. None of the brands we checked publishes that full price before the quiz, so note the figure shown at checkout and diary the date the discount ends.

Do I need freezer space?

For fresh cooked and raw food, yes: Butternut Box, Different Dog and Bella & Duke deliver frozen. Air-dried food (Pure Pet Food) and dry or wet food from subscribe-and-save brands are stored in the cupboard.

Can I cancel a dog food subscription at any time?

All of the brands here say you can pause or cancel, but each has a cut-off before the next order is made, from midnight the day before renewal to three days before delivery. Cancelling after the cut-off usually means the next box still arrives.

Is subscription dog food complete?

Butternut Box, Pure Pet Food and Different Dog describe their recipes as complete. Bella & Duke labels most ranges complete but not its 'Pure Meat + Bone' range. For subscribe-and-save brands, check that each product you choose says 'complete' rather than 'complementary'.
