How we compared · 15 sources, checked 21 October 2026Show

What we did

compared seven trays of four types and six litters listed on zooplus UK and the Litter-Robot UK shop on 21 October 2026. Litter cost per month is worked out only where the maker publishes how long a bag lasts or how often to change it; for those that say “change weekly”, we assumed one tray with a 5.1-litre fill (the Savic Nestor's inner base, about 50 × 34 cm, at International Cat Care's 3 cm depth).

What we did not do

use these trays or litters, or measure odour control, dust or how long a bag really lasts. Your cost will differ with tray size, number of cats and how often you top up.

Which litter tray is best?

The best cat litter tray is the one your cat will use, and International Cat Caregives measurable guidance. The tray should be one and a half times your cat's length from nose to the base of the tail; many standard trays are too small, and rectangular trays give more room than corner or oval ones. Cats prefer about 3 cm of litter. Put the tray somewhere quiet, away from food and water, and not next to a cat flap or a full-length window. Cats with arthritis or reduced mobility benefit from lower sides.

Open or covered is the cat's choice. International Cat Care says covered trays keep smells in for people but can make the tray less pleasant for the cat, some cats feel vulnerable with only one exit, large cats may not fit a small hooded tray, and flaps can deter use. It advises against scented litter, deodorants and polythene liners, which can catch on claws.

Are self-cleaning litter trays worth it?

The Litter-Robot 4 (from £699) was the only self-cleaning tray we found with a current UK price; the only box in zooplus UK's self-cleaning category was sold out. The maker says it suits cats of 1.36 to 11.33 kg and up to four cats. International Cat Care warns that self-cleaning trays often make random movements or noises that can startle cats, and that many are quite small. You still need to change the litter, and a second ordinary tray if you have more than one cat.

Which cat litter, and what does it cost per month?

International Cat Care says a fine, sand-like litter is closest to what cats instinctively prefer, many prefer clumping litter, and preferences form in kittenhood, so change type gradually. It says to scoop at least twice a day and to empty and wash the tray every 2 to 4 weeks with clumping litter, or weekly with non-clumping litter.

Single-bag prices at zooplus UK, checked 21 October 2026. Weekly-change rows assume one tray with a 5.1-litre fill. We show a monthly cost only where the maker publishes usage.

The weekly-change sums use 22.1 litres a month: a 5.1-litre fill changed every week, times 52 weeks, divided by 12. A larger tray or a deeper fill costs more. Add litter to the other running costs in our cost of owning a cat guide.

How many litter trays do you need?

International Cat Care advises one tray per cat plus at least one extra, spread around the house so one cat cannot block another. Its guide to soiling indoors lists dirty trays, scented litter, liners, a sudden change of litter and a busy spot among common reasons cats go elsewhere. International Cat Care notes that chronic kidney disease, hyperthyroidism and cystitis can make cats use the tray more often. If your cat strains, goes more often or toilets outside the tray, contact your vet; our cat insurance guide explains what policies cover.

Others we looked at

  • Omega Paw Roll'n'Clean: the only box in zooplus UK's self-cleaning category (£40.99), sold out on 21 October 2026.
  • Trixie Primo XXL: £31.49 at zooplus; another large open tray. Left out to keep one tray of each type.

Frequently asked questions

What cat litter tray is best?

International Cat Care says the ideal tray is rectangular and one and a half times your cat's length from nose to the base of the tail, and that many standard trays are too small. It says some cats feel vulnerable in covered trays with one exit, so try an open tray if your cat hesitates.

How much does cat litter cost per month?

Where the maker publishes usage, our sums for one tray on 21 October 2026 were about £7.11 or more a month for Cat's Best Original, £11.04 for Breeder Celect paper and £13.58 for Catsan Hygiene Plus, using zooplus single-bag prices. Makers of the clumping clay, corn and silica litters we checked do not publish how long a bag lasts.

Can cats share litter trays?

International Cat Care advises one litter tray per cat plus at least one extra, spaced around the house, because cats can block each other's access when trays sit together.

What litter tray is best for an older cat?

International Cat Care says cats with arthritis or reduced mobility benefit from trays with lower sides. Of the trays here, the Savic Iriz has an 11 cm entry without its rim and the Savic Aseo about 11.5 cm; top-entry trays need a jump.

Should a litter tray have a lid?

It depends on the cat. International Cat Care says covered trays keep smells in for people but can make the tray less pleasant for the cat, some cats feel trapped with one exit, and flaps can deter use, so it suggests removing the flap if your cat is unsure.

Are self-cleaning litter trays worth it?

They save scooping but cost far more: the Litter-Robot 4 was from £699 on 21 October 2026, against £7.39 to £55.49 for the other trays here. International Cat Care says self-cleaning trays can startle cats with sudden movements or noises, and many are small.
