Cocker Spaniel UK: Health, Exercise and Care
The Cocker Spaniel is a small gundog that the Royal Kennel Club says needs up to an hour of exercise and grooming every day. In UK vet records, gum disease (20.97%) and ear infections (10.09%) were the most common problems, and ear discharge was recorded at 14.66 times the odds of other dogs.

Health
Two VetCompass studies of UK first-opinion vet records from 2016 give the clearest picture. English Cocker Spaniels made up 3.06% of the dogs, and the most common diagnoses were periodontal disease (20.97%), otitis externa (10.09%), obesity (9.88%) and anal sac impaction (8.07%) (Engdahl et al., 2023).
Compared with other dogs, Cockers had higher odds of 21 of 43 common disorders. The strongest links were with the ears and eyes: ear discharge (14.66 times the odds) and dry eye, keratoconjunctivitis sicca (7.64 times). They had much lower odds of skin allergy, atopic dermatitis (odds ratio 0.14) (Engdahl et al., 2024).

Aggression and coat colour
Aggression was recorded in 4.01% of Cockers in a year. It was more common in males (4.95%) than females (2.87%), and in solid-coloured dogs (7.00%) than bi-coloured dogs (3.66%) (Engdahl et al., 2023). Most Cockers in the study had no aggression recorded. Meet both parents, ask about temperament, and talk to your vet early if your dog guards food or toys or reacts suddenly.

Feeding a Cocker Spaniel
The median adult Cocker in UK vet records weighed 15.05 kg (VetCompass, 2023), so the worked example above uses a feeding guide for a 15 kg dog. Working Cockers and very active dogs may need more; weigh your own dog and use our dog food portion calculator. Other foods are compared on cost per day in our dog food comparison, and our dog food cost guide shows what a year of feeding costs.
Insuring a Cocker Spaniel
Pawwala is not authorised by the FCA. We explain how cover works and do not give advice or recommend insurers. Pawwala earns a fee when you get a quote through a link marked Ad. Always read the policy wording. How we make money
Ear and eye problems can recur or become lifelong, and dental treatment is not covered by every policy. Check how each policy treats ongoing conditions and dental illness before you buy; our dental insurance guide explains the difference between dental accident and dental illness cover.
| Check in the policy wording | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Policy type | Lifetime cover renews the vet-fee limit each year, which matters for long-term ear or eye conditions. |
| Dental illness | Gum disease was the most common diagnosis in Cockers. Many policies cover dental accidents only. |
| Recurring conditions | Check whether each new ear infection counts as a new claim with a new excess. |
| Hereditary conditions | Check cover for inherited eye and kidney conditions, and from what age. |

Getting a Cocker Spaniel responsibly
Ask for both parents' PRA and AMS DNA results, and ideally their AON and FN DNA results, eye certificates and hip scores. Look the results up yourself on the Royal Kennel Club finder. Rescue organisations also rehome Cocker Spaniels.
What were Cocker Spaniels bred for?
Cocker Spaniels were bred to hunt woodcock, which is where the name comes from. The Royal Kennel Club says all land spaniels were bred together until the Cocker was recognised as a separate variety in 1893, when the main requirement was that it weighed under 25 lb (RKC breed history). The Royal Kennel Club describes it today as both a popular family pet and a gundog.
How long do Cocker Spaniels live?
A 2024 study of UK dogs found a median lifespan of 13.3 years for English Cocker Spaniels (McMillan et al., 2024). In 2016 VetCompass records, the median age at death was 11.44 years (Engdahl et al., 2023). The two studies used different populations and methods, which is why the figures differ.
Cocker Spaniel ear and coat care
Long, heavy ears are part of why ear problems are so common. Check the ears weekly, dry them after swimming or bathing, and see your vet early for head shaking, smell or discharge. The Royal Kennel Club lists daily grooming for the breed; our dog grooming guide compares brushes and tools, and our grooming cost guide covers professional grooms.
Cocker Spaniel vs Springer Spaniel
The Royal Kennel Club lists the Cocker as small, with up to an hour of exercise a day, and the English Springer as medium, with more than two hours a day. The Cocker needs grooming every day; the Springer more than once a week. See our Springer vs Cocker comparison and the Springer Spaniel guide. If you are weighing a Cocker against a Cocker-Poodle cross, see our Cockapoo guide.
