The short answer
Bonfire Night is Thursday 5 November 2026 and Diwali is Sunday 8 November; fireworks can legally go on until midnight and 1am. Charities advise a safe den, daylight walks and sound therapy started weeks ahead. A pheromone diffuser refill works out at about 55p a day, and your vet can advise on medication.
When are fireworks in the UK this season?
Fireworks cluster around four dates. GOV.UK says nobody may set off fireworks between 11pm and 7am, except on these nights, when the cut-off is later. Councils may set local rules as well. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, check the rules on mygov.scot or nidirect.
| Event | Date | Latest legal time |
|---|---|---|
| Bonfire Night | Thursday 5 November 2026 | Midnight |
| Diwali | Sunday 8 November 2026 | 1am |
| New Year's Eve | Thursday 31 December 2026 | 1am |
| Chinese New Year | Saturday 6 February 2027 | 1am |
Expect bangs on the nights around these dates too. GOV.UK says registered sellers may sell fireworks for private use only from 15 October to 10 November, from 26 to 31 December, and in the 3 days before Diwali and Chinese New Year. This year Diwali falls three days after Bonfire Night, which adds another late night. Breaking the rules can mean an on-the-spot fine of £90, or an unlimited fine and up to six months in prison.
Can dogs feel fireworks, and how do you spot fear?
Dogs do not just hear fireworks; the noise can harm them. The RSPCAsays fireworks can produce sounds of 120 to 175 decibels, that animals' ears are more sensitive than ours, and that dogs can suffer tinnitus, hearing loss and long-term hearing damage. Fear, stress and injury are common results.
Signs of fear listed by Dogs Trust:
- whining, whimpering, barking, growling or crying
- hiding, for example under furniture
- shaking or trembling
- clinginess
- excessive panting or drooling
- a tail held low
- pacing
- loss of appetite
- dilated pupils
The PDSA adds that some dogs show only small changes in their normal behaviour. Some of these signs can also point to a health problem, so if you are worried, contact your vet.
How do you prepare a dog for fireworks?
The charities we checked say preparation should start well before the first bangs. With Bonfire Night on 5 November, mid-October is already late for sound therapy, but there is still time for the rest.
Weeks ahead
- Sound therapy. Play firework sounds quietly and build up the volume slowly, pairing them with treats. The PDSA says to start several months before the season. Two free programmes: Dogs Trust Sound Blanket and RSPCA Sounds Scary. Dogs Trust notes its Sound Blanket may not suit dogs sensitive to music or spoken radio.
- A safe den. Set up a hiding spot with favourite toys and bedding a few weeks before (PDSA, RSPCA), somewhere your dog can always reach. See Dogs Trust's safe space guide.
- A pheromone diffuser. The PDSA suggests plugging one in a few weeks before the season and keeping it topped up; the RSPCA says to ask your vet about them.
- Escape-proofing. Dogs Trust advises checking that your house and garden are escape-proof and that your dog's microchip details are up to date. In the UK dogs must be microchipped by 8 weeks old (GOV.UK). A GPS tracker is another layer if your dog is a known bolter.
- A vet check. Dogs Trust says to speak to your vet as soon as possible if your dog shows fear, so they can rule out medical causes and refer you to a behaviourist.
How do you calm a dog during fireworks?
- Walk in daylight and be home before dark (RSPCA, PDSA). Never let your dog out alone: the PDSA says it is common for dogs to bolt from gardens after a bang.
- Shut out the noise. Close windows and curtains, put the lights on and play music or the TV (Dogs Trust, PDSA, RSPCA).
- Stay with your dog if you can. Dogs Trust says your dog could panic if left alone.
- Let your dog choose. If it hides, leave it where it feels safe; if it comes to you, offer calm comfort. Dogs Trust says research shows ignoring a frightened dog does not help.
- Never punish fear or accidents. The PDSA says it will only scare your dog more.
Calming products that are not medicines
These products are not medicines. The PDSA says calming products vary in how well they work and that each dog responds differently, and that a pressure wrap should only be used if your dog is comfortable in it, because feeling restricted can add to distress. What a diffuser costs over the season
One 48 ml vial lasts about 30 days, so covering Bonfire Night, Diwali and New Year means running a diffuser from mid-October to mid-January: a starter set plus two refills.
| Diffuser | Refill cost per day | Starter set + two refills (about 90 days) |
|---|---|---|
| ADAPTIL Calm (zooplus) | 55p | £53.77 |
| ADAPTIL Calm (ADAPTIL UK shop) | 72p | £62.43 |
| Feliway Optimum, for cats (zooplus) | 84p | £79.27 |
You do not have to buy anything for some of the most useful steps. A den made from a covered crate or a blanket over a table, a radio or white-noise app, and the free sound-therapy programmes above cost nothing.
When to speak to your vet
Speak to your vet about medication. If your dog is very frightened, your vet may prescribe medication, and the PDSA says it should be arranged well in advance because the right one can take time to find, and used as a short-term measure alongside the steps above. Dogs Trust notes that many prescribed medicines need giving before fireworks start. The PDSA says never to give your dog any medication that has not been prescribed by your vet. If fear appears suddenly, a check-up can rule out pain or illness. For what vet visits cost, see our average vet bill guide, and for general health topics our dog health hub.
Cats and fireworks
Cats need a different plan. The PDSA and RSPCA advise bringing cats in well before dark, locking cat flaps and windows, and closing curtains. Give your cat a den and extra hiding places, with a litter tray nearby, and do not pick up or restrain a frightened cat. A cat pheromone diffuser works best plugged in weeks in advance (RSPCA). Owned cats in England must be microchipped by 20 weeks old (GOV.UK), so check the details are current in case a cat bolts. Getting a kitten this winter? Our kitten checklist covers the rest.

Questions
What time do fireworks have to stop in the UK?
GOV.UK says you must not set off fireworks between 11pm and 7am, except on Bonfire Night, when the cut-off is midnight, and on New Year's Eve, Diwali and Chinese New Year, when it is 1am. Councils may have local rules too.
Can fireworks hurt dogs' ears?
The RSPCA says fireworks can produce sounds of 120 to 175 decibels and that dogs can suffer tinnitus, hearing loss and long-term hearing damage from them. Animals' ears are more sensitive than ours.
How do I calm my dog during fireworks?
Walk your dog in daylight, close windows and curtains, put the lights and some music or the TV on, and let your dog hide in a safe den if it wants to. Dogs Trust says to offer calm comfort if your dog seeks you out; ignoring a frightened dog does not help. Never punish a scared dog.
What can I give my dog for fireworks?
Only give medicine your vet has prescribed for your dog. The PDSA says never to give a dog medication that has not been prescribed by a vet. Non-medicine options include a pheromone diffuser, a pressure wrap and sound therapy; speak to your vet early if your dog is very frightened.
When is Diwali in 2026?
Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November 2026. Fireworks may legally be let off until 1am on Diwali, so there may be fireworks on both 5 and 8 November this year.
