What we did

compared seven timed and microchip feeders listed by zooplus UK and Sure Petcare UK on 21 October 2026, on price, capacity, wet or dry food, meals a day and power, and set them against International Cat Care's feeding guidance.

What we did not do

use these feeders or measure their timing accuracy, noise or how well cool packs keep wet food cold. We do not quote retailer star ratings.

Trixie Automatic Feeder TX5+1

Six-compartment rotating tray

Capacity
6 × 180 ml portions
Food
Wet and dry; no cooling pack mentioned
Meals and timer
Up to 5 timed meals; manual feed button
Power

Why it made the list

The lowest price here for five timed meals. What the maker says: "Ideal for both wet and dry food", with a button lock so pets cannot change the times and a dishwasher-proof tray.

Watch out for

Wet food sits at room temperature: there is no cooling pack. The listing's battery spec (C) and photos (AA) disagree.

Food
Wet and dry; two cool packs included

Two separate timers, up to 48 hours

Watch out for

Only two meals. The timer is a dial, so opening times are approximate.

Food
Wet and dry; sealed lid
Meals and timer
No timer: opens when the registered cat arrives

Watch out for

It is a selective bowl, not a timed feeder: it does not portion meals through the day.

Needs the Sure Petcare Hub (£85 at Sure Petcare) for the app features.

Are automatic cat feeders a good idea?

Automatic cat feeders suit the way cats prefer to eat. International Cat Caresays cats in the wild eat frequent small meals through the day and night, and that it is best to feed “little and often, dividing their daily ration into at least five portions and feeding this throughout the full 24-hour period, using timed and puzzle feeders”. Of the feeders here, the Trixie TX5+1, both Catit PIXI models and the Cat Mate C3000 can release three or more meals a day; the Trixie TX2 releases two.

International Cat Care also warns that unrestricted access to food may lead to overeating and obesity, and suggests weighing dry food and starting from the pack's feeding guide. Our cat food portion calculator gives a daily amount to divide between meals, and our cat food comparison shows the cost per day. A feeder does not give the mental work of hunting: International Cat Care recommends puzzle feeders for that.

Which automatic feeders work with wet food?

Wet food needs a feeder with lidded compartments, and ideally a cool pack. The Trixie TX2 (£45.59) and Catit Pixi Smart 6-Meal (£130.99) include cool packs; the Trixie TX5+1 accepts wet food but mentions no cooling. The Cat Mate C3000 and Catit PIXI Smart Automatic Feeder are hoppers for dry food only. If you feed a mix, International Cat Care generally recommends a variety of wet and dry food for healthy cats; see our cat food cost guide for what each costs.

What does a microchip cat feeder do?

A microchip feeder controls who eats, not when. Sure Petcare says the SureFeed Microchip Pet Feeder (£115.49 at zooplus, £120 direct) opens for up to 32 registered pets, and is meant for homes where pets eat each other's food, for pets on a prescription or weight-management diet, and to keep food fresher and free of flies. The Connect version (£144.49) adds scales and an app that records how much and how often each cat eats, but needs the £85 Sure Petcare Hub. International Cat Care advises feeding cats in separate, quiet areas, so a microchip feeder can help in a multi-cat home. The same chip reader is used in microchip cat flaps.

How much do automatic cat feeders cost?

On 21 October 2026: £39.59 to £75.69 for timer feeders without an app, £124.49 to £130.99 for app-controlled Catit feeders, and £115.49 to £144.49 for SureFeed microchip feeders. Most listings say batteries are not included. For kittens, see our kitten food comparison and the kitten checklist; for fresh water alongside, see cat water fountains. If your cat stops eating, contact your vet.

Others we looked at

  • Trixie Automatic Feeder TX7 (5 litres): £107.49 at zooplus; a larger dry-food hopper. Left out to keep the list to seven.
  • Closer Pets MiBowl Microchip Feeder: £102.49 at zooplus but sold out on 21 October 2026.
  • SureFeed Sealed Pet Bowl: £61.09 at zooplus; listed as an airtight food bowl, so we did not compare it as a feeder.

Frequently asked questions

Are automatic cat feeders a good idea?

They can be. International Cat Care advises feeding cats little and often, dividing the daily ration into at least five portions across 24 hours "using timed and puzzle feeders". It also warns that unrestricted access to food may lead to overeating, so a timed feeder that releases set portions fits that advice better than a bowl that is always full.

How much are automatic cat feeders?

The seven feeders we compared cost £39.59 (Trixie TX5+1) to £144.49 (SureFeed Microchip Pet Feeder Connect) at zooplus UK on 21 October 2026. App-controlled timed feeders started at £124.49.

Can you use an automatic cat feeder for wet food?

Only some. The Trixie TX2 and Catit Pixi Smart 6-Meal come with cool packs for wet food; the Trixie TX5+1 takes wet food but has no cool pack; the Cat Mate C3000 and Catit PIXI Smart Automatic Feeder are dry food only. The SureFeed microchip feeders take wet or dry food but do not time meals.

What is the best automatic feeder for two cats?

If one cat eats the other's food, a microchip feeder for each cat (from £115.49) opens only for the registered cat. International Cat Care advises feeding cats in separate areas, ideally with 2 or 3 feeding stations per cat, because cats generally do not like to share food bowls.

How do microchip cat feeders work?

The lid opens when a registered cat's microchip or tag is read and closes when the cat leaves. Sure Petcare says its feeder stores up to 32 pets and is for homes where pets eat each other's food, for prescription or weight-management diets, and keeps food fresher and free of flies.
