Cavapoo UK: Health, Parent Breeds and Care

A Cavapoo is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel crossed with a Poodle. In a 2024 Royal Veterinary College study of 985 UK Cavapoos, their health did not differ from either parent breed for 50 of 57 common disorders, so the parents' health tests matter more than the label.

Health

The Cavapoo is not a breed recognised by the Royal Kennel Club, so there is no breed health scheme of its own. A puppy can inherit conditions from either parent, so the useful question is which tests the Cavalier and the Poodle parent have had.

The best UK evidence on Cavapoo health is the "doodle dilemma" study (Bryson et al., PLOS ONE, 2024). It surveyed the owners of 9,402 UK dogs, including 985 Cavapoos, about 57 common disorders in dogs up to five years old. Compared with Poodles, Cavapoos did not differ for 50 of 57 disorders; compared with Cavaliers, they did not differ for 50 of 57. Across all three crosses studied, 86.6%of comparisons showed no difference. The study did not find that crossing made dogs healthier, or less healthy. It relied on owners' reports rather than vet records.

Heart disease (mitral valve disease)
The Royal Kennel Club lists heart screening under the KC heart scheme as Good Practice for Cavaliers. Ask for the Cavalier parent's heart results.
Anal sac problems
Cavaliers had the highest anal sac disorder prevalence of any breed in UK vet records, 14.83% in a year against 4.40% of all dogs (VetCompass, 2021). Cavapoos had about half the odds of Cavaliers (odds ratio 0.53) but 2.64 times the odds of Poodles (Bryson et al., 2024).
Vomiting and diarrhoea
Cavapoos had 1.92 times the odds of vomiting compared with Cavaliers, and higher odds of diarrhoea than both Cavaliers (1.31) and Poodles (1.55) (Bryson et al., 2024).
Ear infections (otitis externa)
Higher odds than Cavaliers (1.62) but lower than Poodles (0.68) (Bryson et al., 2024). Check and dry the ears regularly.
Eye conditions
Lower odds of eye disorders than both Cavaliers (0.56) and Poodles (0.64) (Bryson et al., 2024). Still ask for both parents' BVA/KC/ISDS eye certificates.
Dry eye / curly coat syndrome and episodic falling
Ask for the Cavalier parent's CC/DE and EF DNA results (Royal Kennel Club Good Practice for Cavaliers).
Progressive retinal atrophy (prcd-PRA)
Ask for the Poodle parent's prcd-PRA DNA result.
Kneecap problems (patellar luxation)
Cavapoos did not differ from either parent breed (Bryson et al., 2024). There is no breed DNA test; ask the breeder whether the parents have had their knees checked by a vet.

Health tests to ask a breeder for

  • Cavalier King Charles Spaniel parent: heart screening for mitral valve disease under the KC heart scheme
  • Cavalier parent: DNA tests for curly coat/dry eye (CC/DE) and episodic falling (EF), plus a BVA/KC/ISDS eye certificate
  • Miniature Poodle parent: DNA tests for prcd-PRA and osteochondrodysplasia (OC), a BVA/KC/ISDS eye certificate and a BVA/KC hip score
  • Toy Poodle parent: ask which of these tests the breeder has done (the RKC Toy Poodle page was unavailable when we checked)

The Cavapoo is not a breed recognised by the Royal Kennel Club, so there is no official breed testing scheme. Ask which tests each parent has had.

Which Poodle is the parent?

The Poodle parent changes the likely size of the dog and which tests to ask about. In the 2024 study, 41.5% of Cavapoos had a Toy Poodle parent and 47.7% a Miniature Poodle parent; 61.3% were first-generation (F1) crosses (Bryson et al., 2024). The Royal Kennel Club lists DNA tests for prcd-PRA and osteochondrodysplasia, an eye certificate and a hip score for Miniature Poodles (RKC Miniature Poodle page). Its Toy Poodle page was not available when we checked, so ask the breeder which tests the Toy Poodle parent has had.

What a Cavapoo costs in the UK

Each line says how it was worked out. Where we have no dated figure for this breed, the line links to the page that compares prices instead of guessing.

  • Food

    Compare cost per day

Our dog food comparison works out cost per day from dated prices and feeding guides. Use the portion calculator for your own dog's weight.

  • Insurance

Feeding a Cavapoo

Cavapoos vary in size with the Poodle parent, so there is no single Cavapoo weight to price food against. Weigh your own dog and use our dog food portion calculator for a starting amount, then compare cost per day on our dog food comparison. Because Cavapoos reported more vomiting and diarrhoea than their parent breeds, change foods gradually and speak to your vet if a stomach upset keeps coming back; our sensitive stomach food guide lists what is on sale.

Insuring a Cavapoo

Pawwala is not authorised by the FCA. We explain how cover works and do not give advice or recommend insurers. Pawwala earns a fee when you get a quote through a link marked Ad. Always read the policy wording. How we make money

Inherited heart disease in the Cavalier line and recurring stomach or ear problems are the things to check a policy against. Insure a puppy before any symptoms appear, because a condition noted in the vet record before cover starts is usually excluded. Our puppy insurance guide explains what to look for at that age.

Policy type
Lifetime cover renews the vet-fee limit each year, which matters for heart disease or other long-term conditions.
Hereditary and congenital conditions
Check that conditions inherited from either parent breed are covered, and from what age.
Recurring conditions
Ear and stomach problems can recur. Check whether each new episode is a new claim with a new excess.
Excess and co-payment
Many policies add a percentage co-payment once a dog reaches a certain age.

Getting a Cavapoo responsibly

Ask to see the Cavalier parent's heart, CC/DE, EF and eye results and the Poodle parent's PRA and eye results, and meet the mother with her puppies. Rescue organisations also rehome Cavapoos and other crosses.

What was the Cavapoo bred for?

The Cavapoo is a modern cross, bred as a companion. Its parents had different jobs. The Royal Kennel Club says toy spaniels like the Cavalier were kept by nobility as comforters and lap dogs from at least the 16th century (RKC Cavalier history), while the Poodle was bred in Germany as a water retriever for duck hunters (RKC Poodle history).

How long do Cavapoos live?

We found no published UK lifespan figure for the Cavapoo itself. For context, a 2024 study of UK dogs found a median lifespan of 12.0 years for crossbreeds as a group, 11.8 years for Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and 14.0 years for Poodles (McMillan et al., Scientific Reports, 2024). A cross does not simply take the average of its parents, so treat these as background, not a prediction.

Cavapoo coat care

The Royal Kennel Club lists the Poodle as a breed that does not shed and needs grooming every day, and the Cavalier as a breed that sheds and needs grooming more than once a week. A Cavapoo's coat can take after either parent, so plan for regular brushing down to the skin and professional trims. Our dog grooming guide compares brushes and tools, and our dog grooming cost guide covers what a groom costs.

Cavapoo vs Cockapoo

The same 2024 study included 1,856 Cockapoos. Cockapoos had 2.67 times the odds of itching (pruritus) and 2.13 times the odds of ear infections compared with Cocker Spaniels; Cavapoos did not differ from their parents for itching. Both crosses had higher odds of vomiting than their spaniel parent: Cavapoos 1.92 times the odds of Cavaliers, Cockapoos 1.41 times the odds of Cocker Spaniels. Compared with Poodles, Cavapoos did not differ for 50 of 57 disorders and Cockapoos for 45 of 57; Cockapoos did not differ from Cocker Spaniels for 49 of 57. Cockapoos had lower odds of kneecap problems than Poodles (odds ratio 0.49); Cavapoos did not differ from either parent. In UK vet records, Cockapoos had an anal sac disorder prevalence of 8.47% in a year (O'Neill et al., 2021). Cavapoos were more likely than Cockapoos to have a Toy Poodle parent (41.5% against 23.9%). See our Cockapoo vs Cavapoo comparison and the Cockapoo guide.

What we did

read the 2024 RVC doodle study (Bryson et al., PLOS ONE) in full for its Cavapoo and Cockapoo results, took parent-breed health tests from the Royal Kennel Club Cavalier and Miniature Poodle pages, took anal sac figures from the 2021 VetCompass study and parent lifespans from McMillan et al. (2024) Supplementary Table S3, all on 21 October 2026.

What we did not do

examine any dogs. We found no published UK lifespan, adult weight or dated puppy price for the Cavapoo, so none is given. The Royal Kennel Club Toy Poodle page was unavailable when we checked, so its tests are not listed. The doodle study used owner reports, not vet records, and covered dogs up to five years old.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Cavapoo a breed?

No. The Cavapoo is a cross between a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Poodle, and it is not recognised as a breed by the Royal Kennel Club. That means there is no breed standard and no breed health scheme, so ask which tests each parent has had.

Is a Cavapoo hypoallergenic?

No dog can be promised to be allergy-free. The Royal Kennel Club lists the Poodle as non-shedding but the Cavalier as a breed that sheds, and a Cavapoo's coat can take after either parent. If someone in your home has a dog allergy, spend time with the parent dogs before you commit.

Are Cavapoos healthier than Cavaliers or Poodles?

Mostly no different. In a 2024 RVC study of 9,402 UK dogs, Cavapoos did not differ from Poodles for 50 of 57 disorders or from Cavaliers for 50 of 57. They had lower odds of some problems, such as eye disorders, and higher odds of others, such as vomiting and diarrhoea.

Cavapoo vs Cockapoo: which is healthier?

Neither stood out overall in the 2024 RVC study, which found few differences between either cross and its parent breeds. Cockapoos had higher odds of itching and ear infections than Cocker Spaniels; Cavapoos had higher odds of vomiting than Cavaliers. See our Cockapoo vs Cavapoo comparison.
