Health

A VetCompass study of 3,857 Miniature Schnauzers in UK first-opinion vet records from 2013 found the most common diagnoses were periodontal disease (17.4%), being overweight or obese (8.3%), anal sac impaction (5.8%), vomiting (5.1%) and ear infections (5.0%) (O'Neill et al., 2019). Mean adult bodyweight was 9.9 kg.

The study described how common each problem was in the breed. It did not compare Schnauzers with other dogs, so it does not show which conditions they are more prone to.

Gum (periodontal) disease
The most common diagnosis: 17.4% in one year (VetCompass, 2019). Brush teeth regularly and ask your vet to check them.
Overweight and obesity
8.3% in one year (VetCompass, 2019). Weigh meals and keep treats in the daily allowance.
Anal sac impaction
5.8% in one year (VetCompass, 2019).
Vomiting and ear infections
5.1% and 5.0% in one year (VetCompass, 2019).
Mycobacterium avium (MAC)
Ask for both parents' DNA results (Royal Kennel Club Best Practice).
Eye conditions
Ask for BVA/KC/ISDS eye certificates, including litter screening (Royal Kennel Club Best Practice).

Feeding a Miniature Schnauzer

Mean adult bodyweight in UK vet records was 9.9 kg (VetCompass, 2019). Our dog food data prices adult foods at 20 kg, so we have not given a Schnauzer-specific cost per day rather than guess at a 10 kg feeding amount. Use the dog food portion calculator with your own dog's weight and the food's calories, and compare prices on our dog food comparison. Because being overweight is the second most common problem, weigh every meal; our weight loss food guide covers what to do if your dog has gained weight.

Insuring a Miniature Schnauzer

Pawwala is not authorised by the FCA. We explain how cover works and do not give advice or recommend insurers. Pawwala earns a fee when you get a quote through a link marked Ad. Always read the policy wording. How we make money

Dental disease is the most common diagnosis in the breed, and many policies cover dental accidents only. Check how each policy treats dental illness and recurring conditions. Our dental insurance guide explains the difference.

Dental illness
Gum disease was the most common diagnosis. Check whether dental illness is covered or only dental accidents.
Policy type
Lifetime cover renews the vet-fee limit each year, which matters for long-term conditions.
Excess and co-payment
Many policies add a percentage co-payment once a dog reaches a certain age.

Getting a Miniature Schnauzer responsibly

Ask for both parents' MAC DNA results and eye certificates, and look them up on the Royal Kennel Club finder. Ask to see the puppies' litter eye screening. Rescue organisations also rehome Miniature Schnauzers.

What were Miniature Schnauzers bred for?

The Royal Kennel Club says the Schnauzer has been known in Germany since at least the 14th century, and the Miniature was probably created by crossing in Affenpinscher to bring the size down. It was first officially recorded in 1888. The RKC history does not describe a separate working role for the Miniature; it describes it as a smaller version of the original with the same spirit, now hugely popular as a companion (RKC breed history).

How long do Miniature Schnauzers live?

A 2024 study of UK dogs found a median lifespan of 13.3 years (McMillan et al., 2024), above the 12.0 years for crossbreeds. The earlier VetCompass study, using 2013 records, found a median of 11.6 years (O'Neill et al., 2019). The Royal Kennel Club gives over 10 years.

Miniature Schnauzer grooming

The Royal Kennel Club lists the coat as medium length and non-shedding, with grooming more than once a week. A coat that does not shed holds loose hair, so it needs regular brushing and professional trimming. Our dog grooming guide compares brushes and tools, and our dog grooming cost guide covers what a groom costs.

What we did

read the VetCompass Miniature Schnauzer study (O'Neill et al., 2019), the Royal Kennel Club breed page and McMillan et al. (2024) Supplementary Table S3 on 21 October 2026.

What we did not do

examine any dogs. We did not work out a food cost because our dog food data has no adult feeding amount near the breed's 9.9 kg mean weight, and we found no dated, citable UK puppy price. The VetCompass study used 2013 records and did not compare Schnauzers with other breeds.
