What we did

took one-off prices, feeding guides, ingredient lists and the maker's own description from zooplus UK product pages, kept only complete foods marketed for sensitive digestion, and worked out cost per day for a 4 kg adult cat. Health guidance comes from PDSA.

What we did not do

feed these foods to cats ourselves or check the makers' digestion claims; they are quoted as the makers' claims. Veterinary diets are named for context only, with no prices or buy links.

When to speak to your vet

According to PDSA, most cats vomit from time to time, and common causes include gastritis (a mild stomach upset), worms, fur balls, travel sickness, a change of diet or eating something unusual. Call your vet for advice if your cat vomits more than once, seems unwell or has other symptoms. Contact your vet straight away if your cat:

  • has been vomiting for more than 24 hours
  • cannot keep food or water down
  • is very young or old, or otherwise unwell
  • is lethargic, has pale gums, diarrhoea or a painful tummy
  • has blood or black dots in their vomit
  • is drinking or peeing more than usual

If you are worried about your cat, contact your vet. Food allergies, inflammatory bowel disease and other conditions on PDSA's list need a diagnosis, not a supermarket food change.

Which wet cat food is best for a sensitive stomach?

No food suits every cat. Of the three wet foods we compared, Purina Pro Plan Delicate Digestion had the lowest daily cost (£2.29 for 3 pouches), Hill's Sensitive Stomach & Skin lists chicken and pork first, and Royal Canin Digestive Care gives a lower amount for inactive cats. None declares a total meat percentage. Wet food also adds water to the diet; see our cat food comparison for wet versus dry.

Sensitive stomach and skin

Hill's sells its sensitive range as “Sensitive Stomach & Skin” in both wet and dry, and Purina Pro Plan Delicate Digestion also mentions omega-3 for skin. If your cat has skin problems as well as an upset stomach, speak to your vet about both before changing food; our cat insurance guide explains what cover pays for investigations.

Sensitive stomach and hairballs

PDSA lists fur balls among the common causes of vomiting. Makers sell separate hairball ranges, which we have not priced here. Frequent vomiting, with or without fur, is a reason to call your vet.

Veterinary diets

Veterinary diets such as Royal Canin Veterinary Gastrointestinal and Hill's Prescription Diet z/d Food Sensitivities are made for diagnosed digestive problems and food sensitivities. Use them only if your vet recommends one; we do not price or link to them.

Changing food

Change food gradually. IAMS, for example, says to move a cat onto its food over 4 days. Use our cat food portion calculator to check the daily amount, and our cat food cost guide for monthly costs. For kittens, see our kitten food comparison. Once you find a food that suits, a cat food subscription can cut the cost.

Others we looked at

  • Royal Canin Veterinary Gastrointestinal: A veterinary diet for digestive problems. Use only if your vet recommends it. Not priced or linked.
  • Hill's Prescription Diet z/d Food Sensitivities: A veterinary diet for suspected food sensitivities. Use only if your vet recommends it. Not priced or linked.

Frequently asked questions

What cat food is good for a sensitive stomach?

If your vet has ruled out illness, a complete food labelled for sensitive digestion is a reasonable thing to try. The seven we compared cost £0.25–£0.61 a day (dry) and £2.29–£3.31 a day (wet) for a 4 kg adult cat. If your cat keeps vomiting or has diarrhoea, speak to your vet before changing food.

Is there wet cat food for sensitive stomachs?

Yes. We compared three complete wet foods labelled for sensitive digestion: Purina Pro Plan Delicate Digestion, Hill's Science Plan Sensitive Stomach & Skin and Royal Canin Digestive Care in Gravy. They cost £2.29–£3.31 a day for a 4 kg cat at zooplus UK prices on 21 October 2026.

What is cat food for sensitive stomachs?

It is an ordinary complete food that the maker designs and labels for sensitive digestion. The labels we checked list prebiotic fibres such as fructo-oligosaccharides (Hill's, IAMS, Royal Canin), psyllium (Royal Canin) or fewer, named protein sources (Purina ONE: turkey). They are not veterinary diets.

Does sensitive stomach cat food work?

We found no independent published comparison of these foods. The claims come from the makers. Many stomach upsets have causes food will not fix: PDSA lists worms, fur balls, travel sickness and illness among the causes of vomiting. If a change of food does not help within a few weeks, or your cat seems unwell, contact your vet.
