The short answer

Spaying a dog cost £235–£620 and castration £180–£475 at the 10 UK practices whose price lists we read on 21 October 2026. Bigger dogs cost more: a spay was £235–£335 up to 10 kg and £320–£620 over 40 kg.

How much does it cost to spay a dog, by size?

Four practices publish neutering prices by weight. This table shows the lowest and highest of their prices for each size. Spaying costs more than castration at every practice we checked.

Lowest and highest banded price at Old Registry Vets, Canterbury Vets, the University of Liverpool practice and the RVC, checked 21 October 2026. Liverpool's lowest band is under 25 kg, so it counts for small and medium dogs.

When should you neuter a dog? BVA and BSAVA 2026

BVA and BSAVA recommend spaying most female dogs once they reach maturity, between 12 and 23 months depending on breed and expected age at maturity, and say castrating male dogs should be decided case by case, not before physical maturity for the breed unless there is a compelling reason. (BVA policy; VetClick, 3 March 2026.) This replaced the older one-size-fits-all advice, as our dog health hub explains. The BVA notes that neutering before six months is linked to a higher risk of some orthopaedic conditions, and that neutering female dogs reduces the risk of pyometra (a serious womb infection) and some tumours.

This is general information, not veterinary advice. Pawwala is not a vet. If you are worried about your dog, contact your vet.

Does pet insurance cover neutering?

No. Standard UK pet insurance does not cover routine care such as neutering (see what pet insurance covers). Some practice health plans give a discount: Medivet lists its Healthcare Plan neutering prices about 10% below standard, for example a dog spay from £248.40 instead of £276 at Medivet Coningsby. Our guide to health plans versus insurance explains the trade-offs.

What charities say neutering costs

Battersea's guide puts dog neutering at £200–£350, depending on breed, size and age (Battersea, updated 13 October 2026). That sits inside the practice range but below the large-dog prices. The PDSA includes neutering in its set-up cost for a dog: £415 for a small breed to £560 for a large one (PDSA, costs last calculated in 2024).

Plan the year

Neutering is a one-off cost in a puppy's first two years. Our cost of owning a dog guide adds it to the yearly costs, and the new puppy checklist covers the rest of the first year. For other vet prices, see the average vet bill, dog vaccination costs and cat spaying costs. The CMA published its final Order on 22 September 2026. Its first phase, which includes published price lists so owners know the cost of basic services such as consultations and vaccinations upfront, applies to larger vet businesses from 23 December 2026; smaller businesses have longer. (CMA.)

What these prices do not include

  • Medivet's prices are a "procedure only fee" and Medivet and Chantry Vets publish "from" prices: ask what the final bill includes.
  • Pre-anaesthetic blood tests, pain relief to take home, a buster collar or post-operative checks, unless your practice includes them.
  • Extra charges for a pregnant or in-season bitch (Liverpool lists a £85 pregnant spay surcharge) and keyhole (laparoscopic) spays.

How we worked out these figures

  1. Read the published price lists of 10 UK practices on 21 October 2026.
  2. Recorded every spay and castration price as listed, with its weight band where the practice gives one.
  3. For each size we show the lowest and highest price among the four practices that publish weight bands (Old Registry Vets, Canterbury Vets, the University of Liverpool practice and the RVC). A band counts for a size when the weights overlap. We never average.
  4. Took timing advice from the BVA policy page and the joint BVA/BSAVA position reported on 3 March 2026.

What we did not do:get quotes or survey owners. These are prices at practices that publish them, not national averages. Liverpool's list is correct as of September 2026; the RVC's applies from 3 August 2026; the others show no effective date.
