Health

We found no VetCompass study dedicated to the Bichon Frise, so this section uses the studies that report the breed. A 2024 study of UK dogs found a median lifespan of 12.5 years, against 12.0 for crossbreeds (McMillan et al., 2024). In UK vet records, 7.29% of Bichons had an anal sac disorder in a year, against 4.40% of all dogs, the fourth-highest of any breed; the Bichon was one of six breeds with higher odds than crossbreeds (O'Neill et al., Veterinary Record, 2021).

The Royal Kennel Club lists one Good Practice test for breeders: an eye examination under the BVA/KC/ISDS Eye Scheme. Its Breed Watch places the Bichon in Category 1, meaning no breed-specific points of concern have been flagged for show judges (RKC breed page).

Eye conditions
Ask for both parents' BVA/KC/ISDS eye certificates (Royal Kennel Club Good Practice).
Coat and skin
The Royal Kennel Club lists the coat as non-shedding and advises grooming every day.

Feeding a Bichon Frise

We found no published UK adult weight for the Bichon and our dog food data has no small-dog feeding amount, so we have not given a cost per day. Use the dog food portion calculator with your own dog's weight and compare prices on our dog food comparison. Our guide to choosing dog food explains what to look for.

Insuring a Bichon Frise

Pawwala is not authorised by the FCA. We explain how cover works and do not give advice or recommend insurers. Pawwala earns a fee when you get a quote through a link marked Ad. Always read the policy wording. How we make money

With a median lifespan of 12.5 years, a policy may need to cover a Bichon for more than a decade. Check how premiums and co-payments change with age and how recurring problems are treated. Our insurance for older dogs guide covers what changes as a dog ages.

Policy type
Lifetime cover renews the vet-fee limit each year, which matters for a long-lived dog.
Age limits and co-payment
Many policies add a percentage co-payment once a dog reaches a certain age. Check when it starts.
Recurring conditions
Check whether each new episode of a recurring problem, such as anal sac trouble, is a new claim with a new excess.
Dental illness
Check whether dental illness is covered or only dental accidents.

Getting a Bichon Frise responsibly

Ask for both parents' eye certificates and look them up on the Royal Kennel Club finder, and ask how the puppies have been handled for grooming. Rescue organisations also rehome Bichons.

What were Bichon Frises bred for?

Companionship. The Royal Kennel Club says the Bichon belongs to a family of white Mediterranean dogs (bichon means white dog, and frise describes the corkscrew curls). It was developed in France but may date back to Tenerife in the 14th century, and traders took it to mainland Europe, where it became a pampered pet of royal courts and nobility, often carried in an ornamental basket (RKC breed history).

Bichon Frise grooming

Grooming is the main daily job with a Bichon. The Royal Kennel Club lists the coat as medium length and non-shedding, with grooming every day: loose hair stays in the coat and mats if it is not brushed out. Plan for regular professional grooms as well. Our dog grooming guide compares brushes and combs, and our dog grooming cost guide covers what a groom costs.

How much exercise does a Bichon need?

Up to 30 minutes a day, according to the Royal Kennel Club, which also lists the breed as suited to a flat or a small house. That makes it one of the lowest-exercise breeds in our breed guides; the Springer Spaniel, by comparison, needs more than two hours.

What we did

read the Royal Kennel Club breed page, McMillan et al. (2024) Supplementary Table S3 and the 2021 VetCompass anal sac study (summary on RCVS Knowledge) on 21 October 2026.

What we did not do

examine any dogs. We found no VetCompass study dedicated to the Bichon, no published UK adult weight, no feeding amount at that weight in our dog food data and no dated, citable UK puppy price, so none of these is given.
