When should a cat be neutered?

International Cat Care says: “Neutering should routinely take place at around four months of age, before cats reach sexual maturity”, and that kittens reach sexual maturity from around four months (International Cat Care, updated 26 September 2025). Cats Protection recommends neutering at around four months (Cats Protection), and the BVA recommends around 16 weeks (BVA policy). When BVA and BSAVA changed their dog advice in March 2026, they said the advice for cats was unchanged (VetClick).

This is general information, not veterinary advice. Pawwala is not a vet. If you are worried about your cat, contact your vet.

Can I get help with the cost of neutering my cat?

Cats Protection runs a means-tested neutering scheme: help may be available for people on means-tested benefits or with household income under £25,000 before tax. Contact your local Cats Protection team. In London, the C4 scheme offers neutering and microchipping for £10 through partner vets to eligible owners inside the M25. (Cats Protection financial assistance.) If you use a PDSA PetAid hospital, Cats Protection suggests asking the PDSA about low-cost neutering.

What cat charities say it costs

Cats Protection's cost guide says male cats cost “around £50 to £100” and female cats “around £100 to £300” to neuter (Cats Protection). Battersea puts it at “approximately £50 to £100” for a cat that does not come from Battersea (Battersea, updated 6 July 2026). Battersea's figure is below every practice spay price above.

Does pet insurance cover cat neutering?

No. Neutering is routine care, which standard UK pet insurance does not cover (see what pet insurance covers and our kitten insurance guide). Medivet's Healthcare Plan prices cat neutering about 10% below its standard price, for example a spay at £108 instead of £120 at Medivet Coningsby.

Neutering is one of the first-year costs of a kitten. See our kitten checklist, cat vaccination costs, the cost of owning a cat and the dog neutering prices. The CMA published its final Order on 22 September 2026. Its first phase, which includes published price lists so owners know the cost of basic services such as consultations and vaccinations upfront, applies to larger vet businesses from 23 December 2026; smaller businesses have longer. (CMA.)

What these prices do not include

  • Medivet's prices are a "procedure only fee", and Chantry Vets publishes "from" prices: ask what the final bill includes.
  • Pre-anaesthetic checks, pain relief to take home and post-operative checks, unless your practice includes them.
  • Extra charges for a pregnant or in-season cat.

How we worked out these figures

  1. Read the published price lists of 9 UK practices on 21 October 2026.
  2. Recorded every cat spay and castration price exactly as listed.
  3. Report the lowest and highest price. We never average: these are prices at practices that publish them, not a national average.
  4. Took age advice from International Cat Care, Cats Protection and the BVA, and quoted charity cost estimates separately, as published.

What we did not do:obtain quotes or survey owners. The RVC's list applies from 3 August 2026; the others show no effective date. The University of Liverpool practice lists no cat neutering prices, so it is not included here.
