What grooming costs a year

A Cockapoo groomed every 6 to 8 weeks has about 6½ to 9 grooms a year. At the £40 to £63 the groomers above charge, that is £260 to £546 a year (price × 52 ÷ weeks between grooms). A short-coated dog that only needs a bath and brush every 4 to 6 weeks at Pets at Home's medium price, from £30, costs from £260 to £390 a year, or nothing if you bath it at home.

Grooming is one line in our cost of owning a dog guide. Pet insurance does not usually pay for routine grooming; see what pet insurance covers.

What a home grooming kit costs

Prices on the linked Pets at Home and Wahl pages, checked 21 October 2026.

A brush, nail clippers and shampoo cost £20.50; with a de-shedding tool, £44.50; with a clipper instead, £57.49. The basic kit costs less than one professional full groom, though clipping a long coat well takes practice. Our dog grooming products guide compares shampoos, brushes and nail trimmers, with bathing and nail advice from UK charities.

Do groomers need a licence?

Dog grooming is not a licensable activity under the Animal Welfare (Licensing of Activities Involving Animals) (England) Regulations 2018; Newark and Sherwood District Council says 'Dog walking and dog grooming do not require a licence'. (Schedule 1; council page). iPET Network, an Ofqual-regulated awarding body, offers dog grooming qualifications from Level 2 to a Level 4 Higher Professional Diploma. (iPET Network). Pets at Home says its groomers train for a minimum of 1,000 hours. Ask any groomer about their training and insurance.

What these prices do not include

  • Surcharges for matted coats (for example £25 or more at one Glasgow salon) or difficult handling.
  • Hand stripping, which some groomers price separately.
  • Collection and drop-off, where offered.
  • Treatment for skin, ear or nail problems: if you or your groomer notice one, contact your vet.

How we worked out these figures

  1. Read Pets at Home's grooming prices and the published price lists of seven independent groomers in England, Wales and Scotland on 21 October 2026.
  2. Recorded prices exactly as published, including 'from' prices. Ranges are the lowest and highest published price, not a national average.
  3. Took grooming frequency from the PDSA and Pets at Home, and worked out a year's cost as price × 52 ÷ weeks between grooms.
  4. Priced a basic home kit on Pets at Home and Wahl product pages on the same day.

What we did not do: book grooms. Pets at Home's page shows prices for each size in a tab; we read the other sizes from the page's own price data. Its separate grooming services page shows a different, apparently older, price structure. No independent price list carried an effective date, and four were read on booking sites.
