What should you get a dog for Christmas?

Your dog's present does not have to be new. The PDSA says most dogs will be perfectly happy with a new or rediscovered toy and some extra time with you, and suggests a festive toy rather than a costume. The RSPCAsuggests recycled toys or a Christmassy dog toy. Choose toys made for dogs and the right size for your dog, and supervise play with anything new, because small parts can block the gut. Dog “chocolate” in pet advent calendars is made for dogs; human chocolate is toxic.

Which Christmas foods and decorations are dangerous for dogs?

Christmas also changes routines. Dogs Trust suggests keeping to normal meal and walk times, giving your dog a quiet space with a bed and water when visitors come, and never leaving a child alone with a dog. What to do if your dog eats something it should not

Contact your vet straight away, even if your dog seems fine. The RSPCA says not to wait for symptoms, not to make your dog sick and not to give salt water. Animal PoisonLine, run by the Veterinary Poisons Information Service, is open 24 hours on 01202 509 000; on 21 October 2026 a call cost £35 from 8am to 8pm on weekdays and £45 at other times, including bank holidays. Should you give a dog as a Christmas present?

Not as a surprise. Dogs Trust created its slogan “A dog is for life, not just for Christmas” in 1978, and the RSPCA's Christmas page says pets are for life, not just Christmas.
