What we did

Took each food's single-bag price and pack size from the retailer or brand page linked in the table, and its daily amount from the maker's feeding guide, as recorded in our dog food comparisons on 21 October 2026. On 22 October 2026 we re-read 5 of the prices on the retailer's page; all were unchanged.

Included: every complete adult, senior and veterinary food in those comparisons with a daily cost we could work out (15 foods), plus 6 puppy foods listed as published.

Updated monthly, with each price re-read on its source page. Changes are dated on this page.

What we did not do

Survey owners, feed these foods ourselves, or use repeat-order, voucher or multi-bag prices, which can be cheaper. Fresh, raw and subscription brands publish only “from” prices for a sample dog, so they are not in the index; see our dog food subscriptions comparison.

This is not a national average of what UK owners spend: it is what these named foods cost at the prices shown. A scaled figure is an estimate; the maker's own guide for your dog's weight comes first.

Prices and terms change. Confirm on the retailer's page before you buy.

How much does dog food cost per day in the UK?

Every complete food in our dog food comparison, senior dog food and sensitive stomachpages with a daily cost we could work out, cheapest first within each type. Bold figures come straight from the maker's feeding guide; the rest are scaled.

Bold figures are for the weight in the maker's feeding guide; “scaled” figures use the 0.75-power method described below. Per 30 days is for a 20 kg dog (or 30 kg where the food is for larger dogs only). Single-bag or single-tin prices.

How much more does a bigger dog cost to feed?

A dog twice the weight does not eat twice as much: energy need rises with weight to the power 0.75. On that basis a 30 kg dog costs about 36% more to feed than a 20 kg dog on the same food, and a 10 kg dog about 41% less. For your own dog, use the portion calculator with the numbers on your bag.

Add flea and worm treatment, boosters and insurance in our cost of owning a dog guide. Vet prices from published practice lists are in the UK Vet Price Tracker.

What about puppy food?

Puppy amounts depend on age and expected adult size, so they cannot be scaled like adult food. These are the published figures from our puppy food comparison.

Puppy amounts depend on age and expected adult size, so these are shown as published and left out of the summary.

How we worked out these figures

  1. Cost a day = price ÷ pack grams × the maker's daily grams for the dog's weight. Where the maker gives a range (a weight band, or more and less active dogs), the cost is a range.
  2. Where the maker gives one amount for one weight, we scale it to the other weights with the same method as our pet cost calculator: energy need rises with body weight to the power 0.75 (the AAHA formula), so cost at weight B = cost at weight A × (B ÷ A)0.75. A 10 kg dog costs about 0.59 times a 20 kg dog, and a 30 kg dog about 1.36 times.
  3. Where the maker's figure already spans a weight band, or it has no row for 20 kg, we do not scale it: the 20 kg column shows the band and the other weights say so.
  4. Per 30 days = cost a day × 30. Per year in the answers = cost a day × 365.
  5. Median by food type: each food counts once, at the middle of its own range; the median is the middle of those. The range runs from the lowest figure to the highest.

Some makers feed by the kilo rather than by energy (Burns gives 14 g per kg), so their own guide can differ from our scaled figure at 10 or 30 kg. Our dog food cost per day guideworks out four foods from the makers' own 10, 30 and 40 kg amounts.

Questions

How much does dog food cost per month in the UK?

For a 20 kg adult dog, the 11 complete dry foods in our index cost £15–£46 per 30 days (median £28.50), at single-bag prices checked 21–22 October 2026. Feeding only wet food costs from £157 per 30 days.

How much does it cost to feed a dog per day?

Complete dry food for a 20 kg dog cost £0.50–£1.54 a day across 11 foods in October 2026, with a median of £0.95. Scaled to a 10 kg dog the median is £0.58 a day (6 foods).

How much does it cost to feed a large dog per month?

For a 30 kg dog, the dry foods we could work out cost £31–£51 per 30 days (median £41, 7 foods). Most 30 kg figures are scaled from the maker's 20 kg amount; check your own food's feeding guide.

How much does wet dog food cost?

Feeding a 20 kg dog only on Lily's Kitchen 400 g tins cost from about £5.23–£6.94 a day in October 2026, several times the £0.95 median for complete dry food. Wet food is mostly water, so a dog needs far more of it by weight.
